ST. LOUIS, MO – A hit and run collision has left one St. Louis AAA tow truck driver dead.

The accident occurred on Monday night just after 9 p.m. on eastbound Highway 70 near the West Florissant exit.

David Benes, Sr., 51, was walking back to his truck after putting out flares on the shoulder of the road to hook up a tow when he was struck from behind by a car.

The 21-year-old driver sped off but was later caught and arrested. The suspect was injured in the accident and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Benes, whose family explains had just started working as a tow truck driver for AAA last December, died at the scene of the accident.

The identity of the hit and run driver has yet to be released.
