PLUMAS COUNTY, California – A PG&E truck accident on Highway 70 on Thursday night in Plumas County has left two people wounded and two others dead.

Aaron Joseph Weiss was one of two people that died following the truck accident. Weiss, 31, was the son of Dwight and Debbie Weiss. He, along with his father and his brother, Marty Weiss, owned Weiss Bros. Nursery in Grass Valley’s Glenbrook Basin.

Weiss and the other victim, Ryan Miles, 29, of Chico, drowned when their Ford F550 — a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. utility truck — went off Highway 70 and sank into Rock Creek Reservoir on the Feather River. The truck was discovered by officials under 25 feet of water. The crash occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. Thursday along Highway 70 in the Plumas National Forest. Four utility employees were returning from work in Caribou.

The victims had been heading west when the right tires of the truck drifted off the road onto the dirt shoulder. Miles, who was driving, tried to steer left to regain control, but the truck began to skid and crashed into the reservoir. The two PG&E workers, Mike Diefenderfer, 48, of Paradise, and Loren Bird, 25 of Chico, were sitting in the back seat and survived the crash. Both sustained minor injuries.

Investigators are considering that another incident involving a boulder that fell from the hillside above Highway 70 around the same time as the truck accident might have contributed to the incident.
