Park worker dies in truck accident
A worker for Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Department has died in a truck-related accident.
The worker was involved in an accident involving a dump truck.
According to officials, the victim was 23-year-old William Bell. Bell had been working by himself on Friday morning pouring gravel at an access point for one of the park’s MKT nature and fitness trails.
Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Sapp explained that Bell had been caught between the cab and the bed of the truck, leading to his fatal injuries.
Paramedics were called to the site but Bell was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.
Officials stated that Bell had been in his fifth season working for the parks department. He had been employed with the city since 2007. His death is the first in the parks’ history.
“We are shocked and saddened at the loss of a Parks and Recreation employee this morning. The accident occurred at a work site along the MKT Trail,” said Columbia Parks and Recreation Department in a statement. “Right now our main concern is for the family and for our employees. We are providing counseling through the City’s Employee Assistance Program for those employees who would like assistance. We ask that you keep the family in your thoughts.”
Investigators are performing an inspection of the truck to determine whether it had any defective parts.
